Bill Boylan was the head basketball coach at Monmouth from 1956-1977, while serving as the institution's Athletic Director (1956-1980). Boylan was a standout coach leading the Hawks to a 367-157 record, while winning six NAIA District 31 titles (1966, '67, '68, '69, '70, '75). Led the Hawks to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in 1969.

Widely respected as a true gentleman, Boylan was awarded the Metropolitan Officials Schoenfeld Award for Sportmanship on six occasions.

At Monmouth University, the Bill Boylan Award is presented annually to the senior student-athlete who demonstrates the traits of leadership, sportsmanship, scholarship and athletic ability that were so constant in the career of Boylan.

On May 16, 1992, Monmouth renamed its Alumni Memorial Gymnasium in honor and memory of William T. Boylan, the former coach from the program’s inception in 1956 until 1977. Boylan, who compiled a .699 winning percentage behind 20 winning seasons and six NAIA District 31 titles, was also President of the Metropolitan Collegiate Basketball Association for two years (1971-72).

Boylan was inducted into the Monmouth College Athletic Hall of Fame in May 1981, as part of the first-ever class. Photo Album
