A two-sport standout at Monmouth, Will Puentes '79 starred for the Hawks in both basketball and baseball. Puentes played three and a half seasons for the Hawks on the hardwood, registering over 900 career points, while averaging 23 points per game in 1979. A team captain in 1979, Puentes played under Monmouth Hall of Fame coaches Bill Boylan and Ron Kornegay. Puentes also played three years of baseball, before signing with the Chicago Cubs. A three-time New Jersey Collegiate All-Star and three-time District 31 All-Star, Puentes was honored as a 1977 All-American, and was the Most Valuable Player of the Monmouth squad that advanced to the 1977 NAIA World Series. A three-time team captain, Puentes was also named to the All-Region (Area 8) All-Star Team twice and selected to play in the All-Star Classic on three occasions. The 1975 Monmouth Rookie of the Year after batting .500 and striking out once, Puentes played for Hall of Famer Bob Sprague, and Vinnie Giordano.
