Monmouth's men's and women's track & field squads had a successful first day at the Terrier Classic, hosted on the campus of Boston University on Friday night.
For the men, the distance medley team of Dave Gaines (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck), Darrin Chandler (Hackensack, N.J./Paramus Catholic), Larry Schau (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Ryan Madrid (Clifton, N.J./Paramus Catholic) finished in 10:09, the fourth fastest time in school history and the fastest time that the event has been run in by a Hawk squad in almost 20 years. Madrid, a sophomore, out-kicked Providence's anchor to finish ahead of the Friars in the race.
On the women's side, the 4x400 team of Latasha Dickson (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan), Asha Arneth (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), Michelle Losey (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and Illiana Blackshear (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) finished first among 14 teams. The MU relay squad finished in 3:54.34.
MU's women's track also excelled at the 400m, with Losey taking second place in 57.14, Dickson finishing fourth (57.34) and Blackshear finishing eighth, crossing the line at 58.33.
Deanna Paulson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) finished in sixth place among all collegians in the 200m (25.69), while Losey finished eighth overall among all collegiate runners,crossing the line in 25.77.
Senior Malia Lyles (Collingswood, N.J./Cherokee) finished first in her heat of the 5,000m, finished in 18:04, a personal best. Sophomore Emily Rothenberger (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) finished sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 48' 7 1/2". Freshman standout Brittany Gibbs (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) had a sixth place jump in the triple jump, clearing 36'6".
