West Long Branch, NJ - Senior hurdler
Yasmeen Tinsley will represent Monmouth track & field at the NCAA Championships in Eugene.
Tinsley, the most-decorated woman in the program's Division I history, improved upon her 400m hurdles school record by breaking the 57-second barrier at the NCAA East Regional on Saturday night in Jacksonville. In the quarterfinal round, the senior crossed the line in 56.97 to join a list of 12 qualifiers for nationals.
Finishing fourth in Heat 1 (Top 3 automatically qualify), Tinsley qualified as one of the next three fastest times in the 24-competitor quarterfinal.
"I'm beyond proud of Yasmeen's performance at the NCAA East Regional Meet," said acting head coach
Jordan Torney. "Her mental toughness and focus levels were truly remarkable. She believes in her talents and willed her way to a school record and qualifying time for the NCAA National Championship meet in Oregon! It was great to see her laser focused the entire week and execute her race plan to perfection."
Tinsley's next race will be the NCAA Semifinals on June 12 in Eugene. She is one of 24 hurdlers who remain in contention for the national title as eight semifinalists will earn a ticket to the national final.
It's an opportunity for Tinsley to punctuate what's been a remarkable senior season. This spring alone, she has set Monmouth standards in the 100m dash, 200m dash, 400m dash, 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles.
The Coastal Athletic Association 400m hurdles champion also contested the NCAA First Round in the 100m hurdles on Thursday in Jacksonville. Ranking in between Duke's Birgen Nelson and Virginia's Maya Rollins, Tinsley ran 13.43 to place 32nd in the 48-entrant field.
