Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
Ashalynn Umiamaka (Kapolei, Hawaii/Kapolei [Eastern Arizona]) had three hits and three RBI's, but the Monmouth University softball team was swept by Jacksonville, 4-1 and 7-2, in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. With the losses, the Hawks fall to 3-9, while the Dolphins improved to 17-14.
Emma Hill (Rae, Mo./King City [Highland C.C.]) added two hits, two runs scored and four stolen bases on the day, while
Chloe Howerth (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) also had two hits, a run scored and a stolen base.
Jill Freese (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) chipped in with a hit and threw out three attempted base stealers.
Kayleena Flores (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) and
Nikki Sandelier (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) also added one hit apiece.
Sydney Underhill (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) took the Game 1 loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks in four innings. She struck out three. Underhill, who had pitched in Monmouth's first 54 games dating back to her arrival in West Long Branch as a freshman last season, did not appear in a Hawks game for the first time in Game 2.
Amanda Riley (Tracy, Calif./John C. Kimball) took the Game 2 loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits over three innings pitched.
Breanna Sniffen (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange [St. Petersburg College]) pitched a total of five innings in relief over the two games, allowing four earned runs on nine hits and four walks, while striking out one.
Game 1 started on the right foot for the Hawks as Howerth singled with one out, stole second and scored on Umiamaka's double to center in the top of the first. But Jacksonville scored the final four runs of the game to take the 4-1 lead and limited the Hawks to just one hit the rest of the way. An illegal pitch with runners on the corners in the bottom of the second tied the game at 1-1 and Charli Bradshaw's two-run homer in the third put the Dolphins on top for good. Jacksonville would tack on an insurance run in the fifth on a Lexie Ballard sacrifice fly.
Similar to Game 1, the Hawks struck for a run in the top of the first of Game 2. Hill led off with a single, stole second and third and scored on Umiamaka's sacrifice fly. But Jacksonville responded with Bradshaw's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
Monmouth drew even in the third when Hill reached on an error, stole second and scored on Umiamaka's two-out RBI single to right. But the Dolphins again had the answer in the next half inning, as Victoria Brown and Ashley Simon hit back-to-back solo home runs to give Jacksonville a 4-2 lead after three. Simon's second round tripper of the game, a two-out, two-run shot in the fifth made it 6-2 Dolphins, before Brown singled home another run in the sixth to account for the final 7-2 margin.
The Hawks conclude their Spring Break trip to Florida Thursday, when they travel to North Florida. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for noon.
