Monmouth Drops Close Tuesday Contest at Rutgers

Game 50 Final Score
Rutgers (20-33) – 5
Monmouth (11-39) – 2

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Izzy Bonacci went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, and Monmouth mounted a fifth-inning rally, but the Hawks ultimately fell 5-2 to Rutgers on Tuesday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex.

Monmouth totaled six hits and played error-free defense in a strong midweek road effort. Bonacci drove in Olivia Smith with an RBI single during a two-run fifth inning that pulled the Hawks within one before Rutgers tacked on insurance late.

Smith reached base twice, walked, and scored a run, while freshman Gianna Stern delivered her third career multi-hit performance, going 2-for-2 with a double and a sacrifice bunt. Lexi Castaneda and Kylee McLain also reached safely, with Castaneda adding a single and McLain reaching on a walk and hit-by-pitch.

Down 3-0 entering the fifth, Monmouth's offense came alive. Isabella Slape led off with a walk and moved into scoring position on Smith's single. After an error loaded the bases, Bonacci lined a single to right to plate Smith.

In the circle, Olivia Lewis pitched a complete game for the Hawks, tossing 66 pitches over six innings. She struck out one and allowed just seven hits and two walks while keeping the game within reach throughout.
