WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams each won their respective 2011 Northeast Conference Championships on Sunday afternoon at Kessler Field. The men won their third straight title, and their seventh in the last eight years, while the women also claimed their third consecutive championship, and their fourth in the last five years.
The women scored 185 points, the second-most in the event's history since 1991 (MU's 201 points last year is the record), while the men scored 138.5. MU freshman Laura Williams (North Brunswick, N.J. /North Brunswick Township) was named the NEC Women's Rookie of the Meet.
Senior Tom Ciccoli (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) won the first field event of the day with his 54' 7 ¼” toss in the shot put to earn 10 team points for the already in first Hawks.
Monmouth's 4x100 relay team of Zachary Krupka (Allentown, Pa./Allentown), Josh Lewis (Montville, N.J./Montville Twp.), Jason Kelsey (Ramsey, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) and anchor Geoff Navarro (Mays Landing, N.J./Absegami) took first with an IC4A qualifying time of 41.51. Navarro also earned second-team all-conference accolades in the 100m, running 11.09.
Krupka claimed All-NEC Second Team honors in the 400m, running 48.14. Bayaan Oluyadi (Union, N.J. /Union) finished sixth running 49.18, while Eric Fay (Yatesville, Pa. /Pittston Area) finished seventh in 49.30.
MU dominated the women's high jump, taking three of the top four spots, including the winning leap of 5-08.00 from sophomore Alison Day (West Chester, Pa. /Bayard Rustin).
Rachel Watkins (Oakland, N.J. /Indian Hills) finished second, jumping 5-07.00, while Lindsey Walsh (Mount Laurel, N.J. /Lenape) finished fourth, also jumping 5-07.00. Mary Wilks (Bridgeton, N.J. /Bridgeton) finished in eighth place in the event, leaping 5-02.25. Watkins then won the women' 400m hurdles, running 1:01.27.
The Hawks took first and second in the 1500, with sophomore Amanda Eller (Delmont, N.J./Millville) claiming the gold with a time of 4:42.15 while freshman Mackenzie Roche (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) right behind her with a time of 4:42.77.
Sophomore Shane Carle (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) placed in his second event of the weekend with his seventh place finish in the shot put (51' 4 ¼”).
Symmone Fisher (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) earned Second Team All-NEC honors in the hammer throw with her mark of 188'. Junior Jessica Toritto (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) and Qiyana Hill (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) claimed seventh and eighth in the event, with distances of 152' 3” and 151' 4”.
Williiams claimed second-team all-league in the women's 400m dash, running 54.68. Teammate Michelle Losey (Piscataway, N.J. / Piscataway) came in third, running 55.54.
Jennifer Nelson (Barnegat, N.J. /Barnegat [Ocean County College]) earned All-NEC Second Team accolades after running 17:25.03 in the 5000m. Christine Altland (Hazlet, N.J. /Raritan) finished eighth in the event.
The women's 4x100 relay team placed third for the Hawks, crossing the tape in 47.62. Both the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams each finished fourth in its respective races. The women's team, consisting of Williams, Watkins, Losey and Colleen Rutecki, ran 3:48.05. The men's team, which was made up of Jason Kelsey, Jon Marques, DiBianca and Krupka, ran 3:17.95.
Senior Ashley Cuvilly (Uniondale, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) finished seventh in the triple jump with her distance of 36' 9 ½”.
Jalen Walker (Burlington, N.J. /BCIT/Burlington Township) finished third in the 110m hurdles, running 14.96. In the women's 100m hurdles, Watkins also claimed third, running 14.73.
Pete Matano (Wayne, N.J. /Wayne Hills) finished third in the pole vault, going 14-05.25. Jason Timmons (Latrobe, Pa. /Greater Labrobe) finished fifth, vaulting 13-09.25, while teammate Brandon Cabral (Farmingdale, N.J. /Colts Neck) finished sixth, going 13-09.25.
Sandra Jean-Romaine (Old Bridge, N.J. /Old Bridge) finished fourth in the shot put, throwing 42-04.75. Rachel Aliotta (Chesire, Conn. /Chesire) came in eighth in the event, throwing 40-03.25.
Three Hawks scored in the women's 800m race, led by Danielle Toritto's (Smithtown, N.Y. /Smithtown East) fifth-place finish in 2:18.98. Emily MacEwen (South Glastonbury, Conn. /Glastonbury) finished seventh, while Eller finished eighth.
Ford Palmer (Smithville, N.J. /Absegami) logged a sixth-place finish in the 800m, running 1:56.09. Lachelle Wallace (Herndon, Va. /South Lakes) claimed eighth in the women's 100m, running 12.70.
Ryan Snyder (Sparta, N.J. /Sparta) finished fifth in the hammer throw for the Hawks, throwing 162-11. Three MU men earned points in the 400m hurdles, paced by Joe DiBianca's (May's Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) fifth-place finish, running 55:09. Oluyadi finished seventh, while Steveson Cajuste (Egg Harbor, N.J. /Egg Harbor) came in eighth.
Ben Hutterer (Saxonburg, Pa. /Knoch) claimed an eighth-place finish in the men's 5000m.
