ORLANDO, Fla. - The Monmouth University softball team defeated Florida A&M, 6-4 in its finale at the UCF Invitational on Sunday morning. The Hawks improve to 4-5 on the season with their win over the Rattlers.
The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Kate Kuzma (Freehold, N.J. /Colts Neck) drove a home run over the right centerfield fence, which also plated freshman Shannon Fitzgerald (Santa Clarita, Calif. /Valencia). After added a run in the second, MU increased its lead to 6-0 after striking for three runs in the fourth.
Monmouth held on for the win after FAMU scored four unanswered runs over the fifth and sixth frames. Junior Lauren Sulick (Canfield, Ohio /Canfield) earned the win to even up her season record at 3-3. She pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and four earned runs to go along with strikeouts and two walks.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they visit Stetson in Deland, Florida for a 4:00 pm doubleheader.
