DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Monmouth University softball team swept Bethune-Cookman University in a nonconference doubleheader, winning 7-1 and 6-4 on Friday at Sunnyland Park. The Hawks even their overall season record at 7-7 with the two wins, while the Wildcats fall to 8-14.
In the first game, MU pitcher Lauren Sulick (Canfield, Ohio /Canfield) fired a complete-game, one-hitter to earn the win. She struck out and walked six batters apiece in the first game.
The Hawks struck for three runs in the third, two courtesy of an Emily deLong (Rothschild, Wisc. /DC Everest) single to the left side. Freshman Shannon Fitzgerald (Santa Clarita, Calif. /Valencia) added a RBI-double in the frame for Monmouth. Junior Colleen Kelly (Tallmadge, Ohio /Tallmadge) helped MU add another run a frame later when her single through the right side plated freshman Kaitie Schumacher (San Diego, Calif. /Scripps Ranch), who led off the fourth with a double.
MU added two more runs in the sixth on consecutive run-scoring doubles from Kelly and Christine Scherr (Nazareth, Pa. /Nazareth Area), and the Hawks concluded their scoring when deLong launched a solo home run to left in the seventh.
deLong went 3-for-4 in the game, while Scherr, Kelly and Kayla Weiser (Vandergrift, Pa. /Kiski Area) added two hits apiece for the Blue and White.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday when it visits George Mason University for the Cherry Blossom Classic.
