PRINCETON, N.J.- Monmouth University's women's track team won four events, along with placing in the top eight in a myriad of others in the second day of the Sam Howell Invitational held on the campus of Princeton University.
“I am very pleased with the outcome today especially with the team battling the weather conditions,” said head coach Joe Compagni. “We had some really great performances today by our upper classman and our younger athletes.”
Deanna Paulson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) finished first in the 100m with a time of 12.59, which she followed up with a winning time of 26.13 in the 200m. Crystal Stein (Stewartstown, Pa./Susquehannak) was second in the 200m, crossing the line in 27.54.
Latasha Dickson (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan) was first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 63.47. Freshman Michelle Losey (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) also took home first in the 400m, crossing the line in 57.23. Cailin Lyman (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) was seventh in the 3000m with her time of 10:46.00, while senior Ashley Huffman (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) was second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.72.
Freshmen Brittany Gibbs (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) and Jenn Tarsan (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) went four-five in the triple jump, with distances of 36'2 ?” and 35'4 ?”, respectively. Latasha Leake (Wrightstown, N.J./North Burlington) took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 17' 4 ?”.
The Hawks took fourth, fifth and eighth in the javelin, with Tiffany Hahn (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area) earning fourth with her throw of 126'2". Rachel Ferdinand (Califon, N.J./Vorhees) was fifth with a toss of 125'5" and Julie Frith's (Folsom, N.J./Manchester) throw of 115'1" was eighth.
In the first day of competition, freshman Meredith Malloy (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) set a new Monmouth freshman record in the 10,000m, earning a slot in the ECAC Division I Championships. Malloy's time of 37:37.06 in the event was the third best mark in Monmouth history and placed the freshman fifth overall and fourth among collegiate competitors.
The team will split up again next week, with some members competing at the University of Virginia Invite while others going to the Bucknell Distance Carnival.
