BASEBALL FALLS 2-1 AT NAVY ON SUNDAY

ANNAPOLIS, MD.
- Monmouth University dropped a 2-1 decision at Navy on Sunday afternoon in collegiate baseball action at Max Bishop Stadium. The Hawks fall to 4-4-1 overall with the loss, while Navy improves to 12-5 on the season.

The Hawks' Chris Collazo (Wall, N.J./Wall), who drew a one-out walk in the top of the first inning, was cut down at the plate on Mike Casale's (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) single down the rightfield line, as MU stranded three in the opening frame. Navy then tallied a run in the bottom of the first as a leadoff single, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly led to a 1-0 Midshipmen lead.

The Blue and White knotted the score in the third as Kyle Higgins (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills) led off with a double down the rightfield line. Higgins then advanced to third and then home on consecutive groundouts.

Navy reclaimed a 2-1 advantage in the home half of the eighth inning when Steven Soares drew a lead-off walk from reliever Matt Coulson (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro). After a fly out, Soares advanced to second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Drew Lydon's two-out single up the middle.

In the ninth, Andy Meyers (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) and Casale led off the Monmouth rally with singles, before Meyers was thrown out at third on Rick Niederhaus' (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) sacrifice bunt attempt. The game ended with a Kyle Messineo (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) double play groundout.

Freshman Matt Frazier (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) worked 7.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits, while recording 14 groundball outs and striking out one, in his first career starting assignment. Coulson (0-2) was saddled with the loss, working 1.0 inning, while surrendering the winning run.

Navy's Matt White (4-1) earned the win, going 8.0 frames, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out seven Hawks. JD Melton picked up his fourth save of the year, working a scoreless ninth.

Higgins and Casale each picked up two hits for the Blue and White, while Meyers and Brett Holland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) collected a hit apiece.

Monmouth returns to action this weekend, when the Hawks travel to Wofford, for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
