WILMINGTON, N.C. –
Alec Couture tossed a complete game to lead the No. 3 Monmouth University baseball team to a 7-2 win over No. 4 College of Charleston in an elimination game of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championship Thursday morning.Â
Â
The Hawks picked up their first ever postseason win as members of the CAA and reached the 30-win plateau for the 12th time under head coach
Dean Ehehalt.
Â
Couture surrendered a single run in the first and one in the second before settling in and taking care of business. The senior allowed just one runner to reach second base after the second inning.
Â
Trailing 2-0, the Hawks got things going in the bottom of the third. With runners on second and third with one out,
Simmi Whitehill dropped a sac bunt. An error on the play allowed both runners to come home and tie the game.
Â
Monmouth broke things open in the fifth as the Hawks sent seven men to the plate and scored five times for a 7-2 advantage.
Nick Lovarco drove in a pair with a double while
Brendan Buecker and
Jimmy Bruno plated runs with RBI singles in the frame.
Â
Couture was in control from there as he handled the Cougar lineup and secured the 7-2 win.
