No. 3 Hawks Fall to No. 6 UNCW in CAA Tournament Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The No. 3 Monmouth University baseball team fell to No. 6 UNCW, 5-0 in the first round of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championship on Wednesday.
 
UNCW reached starter Ryan Mealy for a pair of runs in the first inning. A two-out single scored a pair of runs.
 
Monmouth got a lead-off single in the bottom of the second from Brendan Buecker. However, he was stranded at second after a sacrifice.
 
A double and home run to start the fifth pushed the UNCW lead to 4-0.
 
UNCW scored another run in the sixth and pushed its lead to 5-0.
 
Simmi Whitehill worked a walk in the seventh but was stranded as UNCW got the final two outs.
 
UNCW kept the Hawks off the board in the eighth and ninth innings and claimed the victory.
 
Notes
  • The Hawks were making their first appearance in the CAA Tournament since joining the league in time for the 2023 season.
  • Brendan Buecker singled and has now reached base safely in 11 straight games.
  • Simmi Whitehill reached via a walk and has reached base safely in eight straight games. 
  • Jimmy Bruno is now tied for the team lead with nine sac bunts after dropping a successful one in the bottom of the second.
  • The Hawks lead the CAA with 51 sac bunts this season.
  • Ryan Mealy took the loss for the Hawks after going five innings and surrendering four runs.
  • Kevin Opanel gave up one run in three innings of relief work. It was the first time he surrendered a run since May 1 against Northeastern.
