New York, N.Y.- Paced by the throwers, Monmouth men's track & field team placed fourth out of 22 teams at the Great Dane Classic on Friday night, held in the 168th St. Armory.
MU's men's squad took home fourth place out of 28 teams competing in the event. The Hawks finished above New Jersey rivals Rutgers and Rider, while beating out the other two teams competing from the Northeast Conference. Despite the event running into the early morning on Saturday, MU's throwers were solid in the late night, as the Hawks placed four athletes in the top-eight of the shot put and the weight throw.
Nick Williams' (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) second place throw in the shot (56'1”), was followed up by a third place finish by Kyle Hirschklau's (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) throw of 53'3-3/4”. Larry Lundy (Friendsville, Pa./Montrose Area) and Christian Keller (Matawan, N.J./Matawan) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with throws of 52'5” and 51'11”. Both Lundy and Keller qualified for the IC4As for the first time this season in the event with their tosses.
MU did even better in the weight throw, with Keller winning the event with a throw of 61'9" 1/2. Ed Skowronski (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) qualified for the IC4A's with his second-place throw of 60'2" 1/2, while Lundy took fourth with his throw of 56'1 1/2". Ryan Connell (Nutley, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) picked up sixth place for the Hawks with at throw of 54'5 1/4".
Fabrice St. Elme (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) got things going for the Hawks with his fourth place finish in the 55m dash, coming in at 6.34. St. Elme also ran 22.71 in the 200m dash, seeded event, while freshman Jerome St. Bernard (Markham, Ontario/Michael McGivney) qualified for the IC4As in the same event with a time of 22.20. Chris Taiwo and Christopher Vuono (Wall, N.J./CBA) also had top-10 finishes in the non-seeded 200m dash.
MU's Kevin Gilroy (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) picked up a 10th place finish in the 400m dash (50.13), while Vuono took home first place in the 500m, with a time of 1:03.74. David Gaines (Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck) took seventh place in the seeded 800m finishing in 1:55.85, while Larry Schau (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Ryan Madrid (Clifton, N.J./Paramus Catholic) had ninth and 10th place finishes in the non-seeded mile.
In the relays, the Hawks distance medley team of Gaines, Josh Burnett (Wenonah, N.J./Deptford), Peter Forgach (Long Branch, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) and Madrid finished eighth (10:24.02), while the 4x400 squad picked up a third place finish, crossing the line in 3:20.55.
Matt Losey's (Pen Yan, N.Y./Marcus Whittman) high jump of 6'5" was eighth, while graduate student Craig Segal's (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) time of 8:37.39 was fourth in the 3000m seeded run.
Martin Suarez III (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross) finished fifth for the Hawks in the 5000m, with a time of 15:08.54, setting his personal best by nearly 30 seconds.
The Hawks will split the team this weekend, with some competing at the Bison Open & Pentathlon and others going to the Terrier Classic on Friday, Jan. 26.
