5 Questions for Track & Field's Jordan Torney Heading into CAA Championships

May 12, 2025

West Long Branch, NJ - The Monmouth men's and women's track & field teams will contest the Coastal Athletic Association Outdoor Championships on May 14-15 in Greensboro, NC.

North Carolina A&T will serve as meet host at the Marcus T. Johnson Track as the Hawks travel south to the Tar Heel State. Prior to Monmouth's departure, we caught up with acting head coach Jordan Torney, who answered five meet-related questions.

Q: What are your expectations for the men's and women's programs heading into the CAA Championships?

A: My expectations for both of our programs are that everyone competes like a Monmouth Student-Athlete. When you think of Monmouth Track & Field, you always associate us as a program that rises to the occasion in championship meets. We have a great tradition of winning conference titles. We're in a great position to do so this week but we must compete like us!

Q: How would you grade the men's and women's teams performances up until this point in the season?

A: I would give both our programs an "A" for how we did in the Regular Season. The meets couldn't have gone much better. We broke seven school records, qualified a good amount of athletes for the NCAA first round and it felt like we had a million top ten performances each meet. I view the conference meet as the final exam, we need to continue doing the small things that gave us all of our success up to this point in order to cap off the season with a team title.

Q: What has been the top highlight, on an individual or team level, thus far this season?

A: We've had a lot of our top athletes set marks that rank them high in the NCAA national ranking list. I would say the top highlight is the amount of CAA Athlete of the Week Award Winners we've had. We compete in arguably the best mid-major conference in the country and to receive an award five out of eight total weeks is very impressive.

Q: You joked that Yasmeen Tinsley is Monmouth's version of Thanos as she collects record after record. What has she meant to the program? How rewarding has it been to aid in her development?

A: What Yasmeen has been able to do this year is unprecedented. To break every sprint and hurdle school record indoors and outdoors is truly remarkable! Her impact on the program has been tremendous, she's proven that Monmouth offers everything an elite athlete needs in order to compete on a national stage! It's rewarding as a young coach to have an athlete competing at this level, makes me very excited about the future here at Monmouth.

Q: What has made coaching these teams so enjoyable this year?

A: What's made coaching this year's team so enjoyable is the desire our athletes have to be great! I've never been around this amount of student-athletes and coaches that want to win this much. Our Athletes and Staff have put in a lot of work this year and I'm looking forward to it all paying off this week in Carolina!
