Monmouth Men Take Second Place at CAA Outdoor Championships

May 15, 2025

Greensboro, NC - Monmouth posted its third Top 3 men's team finish in what was its third time contesting the Coastal Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The Hawks totaled 141 points to finish second overall at the two-day meet, which consisted of 21 events. Host school North Carolina A&T topped the men's team standings with 177 points.

"Once again very proud of how we competed the past two days! The CAA is an elite conference, and it's awesome to be amongst the top teams competing for a team title," said acting head coach Jordan Torney.

Monmouth won 12 individual medals with thrower Zay Battle and Decathlete Jan Volkmar both securing multiple Top 3 finishes.

Battle single-handedly accounted for 23 points. The veteran thrower won the discus, took silver in the hammer throw and added fourth-place points in the shot put. He missed a third trip to the medals podium by two centimeters in the shot.

Volkmar took third place in the pole vault competition and later set Monmouth's record in the Decathlon. Totaling 7,049 points in the multis, he earned a silver medal with teammate David Strong 21 points behind in third.

"Going into the meet we were very strategic with what events we entered our athletes in and we made a great push to win the meet. Our athletes competed incredibly hard and put their bodies on the line in order to achieve something great and that's our standard on how we compete in a championship setting," said Torney.

The Hawks produced three scorers in two separate distance events.

On Wednesday, Gavin Rossi took second place to spearhead a 17-point effort in the steeple chase with Niko Ferrante taking third and James Martinez nabbing sixth.

In Thursday's 1500m finals, Tomas Barry made the podium with a third-place finish followed by Tennessee Tremain in fifth and Nico Grilli in sixth.
