ORLANDO, FL – The Monmouth University bowling team enjoyed a trip down to Orlando this past weekend for the Sunshine State Classic, where the Hawks went 6-6 overall and placed sixth out of 11 teams.
The three-day event co-hosted by Sacred Heart and Stephen F. Austin was Monmouth's first trip outside of the Northeast since competing in the Track Kat Klash in Houston during the first weekend of November earlier this season.
After picking up a win over UAB (873-815) in Friday's Baker format, the Hawks were sharper on Saturday, going 4-2 in traditional play. Monmouth defeated LIU (891-884), St. Francis Brooklyn (1,028-743), No. 5 Stephen F. Austin (993-981), and Emmanuel College (973-891). On Sunday for the tournament, the Hawks beat UAB again before falling to Florida A&M for a sixth-place finish.
In total, the Hawks knocked down 12,625 pins and averaged 188.4 pins per game on the weekend, which were both fifth-best.
Skylar Smith placed 16
th individually after averaging 204.5 pins per game and recording four 200+ performances. Smith's highest game was a 230 versus #5 Stephen F. Austin.
Sierra Poole and
Jamie Phelan finished 21
st and 22
nd respectively and each had three 200+ games.
Siyah Sweeny and
Jenna Lehrer were 28
th and 29
th, each with a single 200+ game.
NOTES
- Saturday's win over #5 Stephen F. Austin is the second time MU has beaten the fifth-ranked team in the country this season (11/19 vs. #5 Sam Houston: 914-910).
- The Hawks now have eight wins over ranked opponents this season.
- Monmouth's highest pin total in Baker format was 905 versus Florida A&M.
- Monmouth's highest pin total in Traditional play was 1,046 against #6 Arkansas State.
- Monmouth's largest margin of victory was by 285 pins over St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday.
- The Hawks are 3-0 versus St. Francis Brooklyn, 3-0 versus UAB, and 2-0 versus LIU this season.
