TRACK & FIELD KICKS OFF 2017 AT PAIR OF MEETS

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Monmouth University's men's and women's track and field teams started up the new year with the field athletes competing at the Wagner Invite and the track athletes heading to Rutgers on Saturday.

 

At Wagner on Friday night, the men's weight throw dominated the field with four finalists, including winner Tim Wilson (Washingtonville, NJ/Washingtonville), Troy Andretta (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) taking second and Vince Santasiero (Haddonfield, NJ/Paul VI) taking third place. Junior Dean McDonald (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) took third in the pole vault while Bryan Sosoo (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) took second in the 60m.

 

At Rutgers on Saturday, Jenna Cupp (Newark Valley, NY/Newark Valley) won the 1k with an ECAC qualifying time of 2:55. Senior Molly McKeon (Royersford, PA/Pope John Paul II) took first in the mile (5:13.52) Freshman Viviane Orleans earned a victory in the 60H (9.10) with senior Tionna Garner (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic Academy) claiming first in the 600m crossing the tape at 1:34.22. On the men's side senior Malcolm Chavis (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) rolled to 1st in the 200 (22.44) and second in the 400 (49.41) while freshman Peter Guerriero (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) earned second in the 60m with a time of 7.03.

§  Wilson has won the weight throw twice and finished second in the three meets so far of the indoor season

§  Monmouth's cross country and track and field teams had 48 total student-athletes earn a 3.5 grade point average or higher in the fall semester.

§  Six of those student athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPAs

 

Numbers Crunch:

§  Seniors Rachael Baker and Maggie Hanlon took fourth and fifth in the mile at Rutgers

§  Senior Antoniette Iskenegbe was third in the 400m

§  Freshman Emily Schroepfer claimed third in the 60m with a time of 8.00

§  Sophomore Chandi Piiru finished third in the 600m with a time of 1:35.79

§  Kennisha Okereke placed fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 16.63m

§  Alicia Hester took sixth and eighth in the weight throw and shot put, respectively at Wagner

§  Freshman Jordan Wildermuth took fifth in the shot put (13.42)
