MEN'S TENNIS EDGED AT QUINNIPIAC, 4-3

HAMDEN, CTPrzemyslaw Filipek (Bedzin, Poland/Second Lo [Silesia]) won at both singles and doubles, but the Monmouth University men's tennis team was edged at longtime conference rival Quinnipiac, 4-3, Thursday afternoon at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 7-9 (4-1 MAAC), while the Bobcats improve to 12-6 (4-0 MAAC).

“Credit to Quinnipiac today,” said Monmouth Head Coach Kyle Bailey. “They came out to play and it was a great battle to the end. We will learn from this match and use it to make us better.”

The Bobcats won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Luke Roser and Kei Ezaka defeated Richard Chen (Shanghai, China/Pendleton School) and Ale Gomez Estrada (Guayaquil, Ecuador/PERT), 6-1, while Julian Rozenstein and Ryoma Haraguchi got past Christian Vieira (Houston, TX/Memorial) and Alberto Giuffrida (Catania, Italy/Lincoln) by the same score. Filipek and Vidit Vaghela (Ahmedabad, India/A.G. High School [H.L. College of Commerce]) defeated Jonas Kuwert and Freddie Zaretsky, 6-4, at No. 1.

The Bobcats extended to a 2-0 lead when Haraguchi defeated Chen, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles. Monmouth stormed back to within a win of clinching the match with victories at Nos. 3, 2 and 4. Gomez Estrada defeated Rozenstein, 7-6 (6), 6-3, at No. 3, before Filipek evened the score with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4), victory at No. 2. Vieira took a 6-4, 7-6 (4), win over Kuwert at No. 4 to bring the Hawks to within a victory of clinching the match.

But the Bobcats won the final two flights at Nos. 1 and 5 to take the match. Ezaka defeated Vaghela, 6-4, 7-6 (1), at No. 1, before Roser clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-4, victory over Giuffrida at No. 5.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow, when they play host to Hofstra. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
