Sydney Underhill (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) took the Game 1 win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk in 4.1 innings pitched. She struck out one. She also pitched three innings of relief in Game 2, allowing three earned runs on four hits.
Amanda Riley (Tracy, CA/John C. Kimball) earned the save in Game 1, limiting the Dolphins to two earned runs on two hits and three walks in 2.2 innings pitched. She struck out three. She also took the Game 2 loss, again allowing two earned runs on two hits and three walks, this time in three innings. She again struck out three.
10 Hawks came to bat and Monmouth posted a five-run top of the first in Game 1. After Howerth singled with one out,
Rachel Shotzbarger (Saugus, CA/Saugus) and
Justene Reyes (Carson, CA/Warren) hit consecutive RBI doubles to make it 2-0 Hawks. Umiamaka was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for Freese, who singled to right to score Reyes. A Wieczorek infield single plated Umiamaka, before Freese scored on a sacrifice from Riley to make it 5-0 Monmouth.
The Dolphins got single runs back in the first and second innings on solo home runs from Heather Roberts and Victoria Brown to cut the Hawks' lead to 5-2. After three scoreless frames, Jacksonville made it a 5-3 game on Adrienne Ramsay's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
Freese gave Monmouth some insurance in the top of the seventh with a two-out, two-run home run to left. The Dolphins got one back on an RBI groundout by Allie McCourt and brought the tying run to the plate with one out. But Riley got a popout and a strikeout to secure the save.
Jacksonville struck first in the bottom of the second in Game 2. Emily Sanchez led off with a walk and came around to score on Kristen Griffith's double to left. The Dolphins would put two more on the board in both the fourth and fifth innings. The run support was more than enough for starting pitcher Paige Curtis, who hurled a complete-game, four-hit shutout. She didn't walk a batter and struck out two.
The Hawks conclude their Spring Break trip tomorrow, when they play a single game at North Florida. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
