MONMOUTH MEN OPEN INDOOR SEASON WITH A WIN AT HOME

 WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Monmouth University men's track and field team opened up the 2016-17 Indoor season with a win over MAAC rivals Rider University and Saint Peter's while the women defeated the Peacocks but ultimately fell to the Broncs.

Men's throwers Tim Wilson (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and Troy Andretta (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) both qualified for the IC4As in the weight throw while Kennisha Okereke (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Alicia Hester (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) also qualified in the event for the ECACs. Additonally, freshman Brandon Davis qualified for the IC4A's in the shot put with his throw of 15.80.

Earlier this afternoon the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference released that both the men's and the women's teams were chosen to repeat as champions in the preseason polls

"First meets are a great opportunity to see where we are at as a team, and to see what we need to work on," said Monmouth Head Coach Joe Compagni. "I know that we will work to get better in many ways in the weeks ahead, but we have many sprinters, jumpers and throwers that put together some very strong first meet performances today."

·         With the won over Rider and Saint Peter's, Monmouth's men continue their unbeaten streak in eight years in the OceanFirst Bank Center.

·         The Monmouth men have not lost a home meet in indoor or outdoor track since 1996.

·         After defeating Saint Peter's and falling to Rider today, Monmouth's women snap their unbeaten streak at home. The women had not lost a meet in the OceanFirst Bank Center and had not lost a home meet in indoor or outdoor track since 2001.

·         Freshman Nioami Miranda (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) won the 300m in her first collegiate race.

·         The men's and women's teams combined to win 11 events on the day.

Inside the Numbers:

·         Wilson's weight throw (19.40 meters) is the 7th best throw in school history, and puts him as the #2 performer in school history behind Errol Jeffrey.

·         Tionna Garner's time in the 600 (1:34.78) is no. 2 in school history, behind only the school record 1:34.17 she ran at Rutgers last January.

·         Nioami's 300 time (41.29) is the 7th best time in the event in school history, and she is the 2nd fastest freshman in school history in the event. 

·         Monmouth won both of the 4x400 relays.

·         Senior Kahlid Slocum's 7.07m long jump won the event, which saw Monmouth take six of the first seven and eight of the top-10 overall spots.
