MANHATTAN SWEEPS MONMOUTH SOFTBALL

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Kayleena Flores (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) compiled four hits, including two in each game, but the Monmouth University softball team was swept by Manhattan by a pair of 5-0 final scores Sunday afternoon. With the losses, Monmouth falls to 8-17 (4-4 MAAC), while the Jaspers improve to 17-9 (8-0 MAAC).

Ashalynn Umiamaka (Kapolei, Hawaii/Kapolei [Eastern Arizona]), Vanessa Cardoza (Santa Ana, Calif./Ocean View), Emma Hill (Rae, Mo./King City [Highland C.C.]), Justene Reyes (Carson, Calif./Warren) and Rachel Shotzbarger (Saugus, Calif./Saugus) also added one hit apiece. Hill and Shotzbarger's base hits were doubles.

Sydney Underhill (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) took the Game 1 loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits and five walks, striking out two. Amanda Riley (Tracy, Calif./John C. Kimball) took the Game 2 loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits and a walk.

Manhattan home runs were the story of the day. Briana Matazinsky hit a two-run home run in the second inning of Game 1, before Jenn Vazquez made Underhill pay for a pair of walks with a three-run shot in the fifth. That was all the scoring in Game 1.

Monmouth loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but couldn't score. The Hawks also threatened in the fifth, but pinch runner Raeann Buskey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was thrown out trying to score from second on Umiamaka's two-out single up the middle. Manhattan starting pitcher Amy Bright then retired the last six Monmouth batters consecutively to close out the game.

Much like Game 1, Manhattan used the long ball to take a lead in Game 2. Elena Bowman hit a two-out solo shot to left to give the Jaspers a 1-0 lead after 1.

Monmouth threatened in the fourth, as Flores singled and Shotzbarger followed with a ground-rule double to put runners on second and third with one out. Meagan Newton-Pender (Holbrook, Ariz./Holbrook [Mesa C.C.]) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Matazinsky, who hurled a complete-game shutout in Game 2, got out of trouble with a strikeout and a groundout to end the half inning.

Following a pair of Manhattan singles to open the sixth, Riley was replaced in the circle by Breanna Sniffen (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange [St. Petersburg College]). A walk loaded the bases before Vazquez connected for a two-run double. Later in the inning, Matazinsky helped her own cause with a two-run single to make it 5-0.

Matazinsky mowed down the Hawks over the final three innings, allowing only one base runner on an error.

The Hawks return to non-conference action Wednesday, when they play host to Saint Joseph's. First pitch from MU Softball Park is scheduled for 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
