Justene Reyes (Carson, Calif./Warren) homered, doubled and drove in three of the Monmouth University softball team's four runs on the day, but the Hawks were swept at North Florida, 9-1 and 4-3, Thursday afternoon. With the losses, the Hawks fall to 3-11, while the Ospreys improve to 20-11.
Emma Hill (Rae, Mo./King City [Highland C.C.]) also added two hits and two runs scored, while
Chloe Howerth's (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) RBI single with two outs in the seventh tied Game 2. Freese added a double, while
Kayleena Flores (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony),
Ashalynn Umiamaka (Kapolei, Hawaii/Kapolei [Eastern Arizona]) and
Nikki Sandelier (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) added one hit apiece.
Sydney Underhill (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) took both losses in the circle, starting Game 1 before entering Game 2 in relief. All told, she allowed seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits and five walks, while striking out four.
Amanda Riley (Tracy, Calif./John C. Kimball) started Game 2, allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. She struck out two.
North Florida got three runs each in the first, fourth and fifth innings to score the 9-1 win in five innings in Game 1. Kelly Wilson and Ashley Niesman had three hits apiece, with Wilson scoring three runs and driving in two, while Niesman had three RBI's. The Hawks scored their lone run in the top of the fifth as three Monmouth batters walked to load the bases before Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to score Hill.
The Hawks jumped out in front with a run in the first and another single tally in the fourth. Hill led off with a single, advanced two bases on a groundout and scored on Reyes' two-out double. Reyes struck again with a solo home run in the fourth on a 3-2 pitch. In the bottom half of the inning, UNF got a run back with a leadoff double, a wild pitch and a single.
The Ospreys scored twice, thanks in large part to free passes, to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. A walk, a sacrifice bunt, a hit by pitch, a single, another hit by pitch and a fielder's choice allowed two runs two score. Following another walk to load the bases, Underhill came on and induced an inning-ending groundout.
Down to their last out, the Hawks managed to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Freese doubled to lead off the inning and pinch runner
Raeann Buskey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) moved to third on Hill's sacrifice bunt for the second out. Buskey then scored on Howerth's two-out single to left center to tie the game.
But North Florida used a leadoff single, a walk and a one-out RBI single from Stephanie Schmidt to walk off with the 4-3 win and the doubleheader sweep.
The Hawks are scheduled to play their home opener Tuesday against Rutgers. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
