Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. –
Katie Baron (Matawan, N.J./St. John Vianney) went 2-for-4 and drove in the game-tying run in the top of the seventh to cap a comeback from a 3-0 deficit, but the Monmouth University softball team fell to the University of Illinois at Chicago, 4-3, Sunday at the UCF Spring Fling. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-6, while the Flames improve to 8-10.
Chloe Howerth (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah),
Emma Hill (Rae, Mo./King City [Highland C.C.]) and
Jill Freese (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) added one hit apiece, with Hill also driving in a run.
Nikki Sandelier (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) scored a run and added an RBI, while
Justene Reyes (Carson, Calif./Warren) and
Kayleena Flores (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) also scored a run.
Amanda Riley (Tracy, Calif./John C. Kimball) got the start in the circle and allowed three runs, two earned.
Breanna Sniffen (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange [St. Petersburg College]) kept the Hawks in the game with three scoreless innings, while
Sydney Underhill (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) allowed only an unearned run in the final 1.1 innings.
UIC got a run in the first and two more in the second. Leadoff walks came around to score in both frames. The first run scored on an Erica Hampton infield single. In the second inning, the first run came in on a wild pitch, while Eleni Polites' two-out triple made it 3-0 Flames.
The Hawks got a run back in the third on Hill's two-out RBI single and tied the game with single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings. Two walks and an error loaded the bases for Sandelier, who was plunked to drive in a run in the sixth. A walk, a wild pitch, an error and Baron's two-out single through the right side tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. But a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an error allowed UIC to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, when they travel to Stetson. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m.
