UNDERHILL DOMINANT AS SOFTBALL SWEEPS CANISIUS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman pitcher Sydney Underhill limited Canisius to just one run over 14 innings pitched as the Monmouth University softball team swept the Golden Griffins, 2-0 and 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. With the sweep, the Hawks improve to 18-18 (9-7 MAAC), while Canisius falls to 16-28 (6-10 MAAC).

Underhill allowed just one run on 10 hits and two walks in 14.0 innings pitched, while striking out seven. She was backed by a 3-for-6 effort from fellow freshman Rachel Shotzbarger (Saugus, Calif./Saugus), who hit a pair of doubles, drove in a run and scored another. Kayleena Flores (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) and Vanessa Cardoza had two hits each, with Flores driving in a run and Cardoza scoring once. Nikki Sandelier (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) and Jill Freese (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) each added a hit and an RBI, while Justene Reyes (Carson, Calif./Warren) had a double and a run scored.

In Game 1, the teams were scoreless through four innings before Shotzbarger led off the 5th with a double and scored on Freese's one-out single through the left side. The Hawks added an insurance run when Raelynn Galindo (Yorba Linda, Calif./Yorba Linda) led off the 7th with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Sandelier's groundout. That was more than enough for Underhill, who shut the door on a complete-game, three-hit shutout.

After three scoreless innings in Game 2, the Hawks struck for two runs in the 4th. With one out, Cardoza and Reyes hit a single and a double, respectively, to put runners on second and third. Shotzbarger immediately followed with a single to score Cardoza and Flores then knocked in Reyes with a single of her own, putting Monmouth on top, 2-0.

The two-run cushion again was enough for Underhill in the circle. The Golden Griffins pieced together a two-out rally with a walk and two singles to score one run and cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 5th. But that was as close as they'd get as Underhill again closed out the victory.

The Hawks play their final regular-season non-conference contest Thursday, when they travel to Temple. First pitch from Ambler, Pa., is scheduled for 4 p.m.
