PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Juniors Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and Victor Pugliese (Boulogne, France/CNED/San Diego) along with sophomore Brant Switzler (Stockton, N.J./Hunterdon Central) each scored two singles victories, while the doubles teams won five of its eight matches as the Monmouth University men's tennis team wrapped up play at the Penn Invitational. The Hawks took on the likes of Binghamton, Stony Brook, Niagara and Saint Peter's in the mock dual match tournament.
“I thought this was a great experience for our young team to play in a dual match format,” stated head coach Cory Hubbard. “Victor, Freddy and Brant had good results winning two singles matches and Christian and Bee are starting to play some good doubles and develop great chemistry. We got to compete against two MAAC teams which will give us confidence when we see them again this spring. “
Marcinkowski earned a pair of three-set singles victories, downing Binghamton's Vihar Shah 3-6, 6-4, 6-5 (5) and Niagara's David Raymond 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Pugliese cruised past Alex Maisin of Binghamton 6-1, 6-1, before edging Stony Brook's Jose Morales 6-1, 6-5 (8-6). Switzler earned wins over MAAC opponents, defating Mathieu Lacasse of Niagara 6-1, 6-3 and Saint Peter's Jorge Rodriguez 6-0, 6-3. Christian Vieira (Houston, Texas/Memorial) and Jason Prezant (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills) both picked up victories, defeating Niagara's Lorenz Schwojer and Saint Peter's Luke Whale, 6-1, 3-6, 6-5 (4) and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
Bee Kumthonkittikul (Bangkok, Thailand/Pendleton School) and Vieira went 3-1 in doubles play over the weekend to lead the Blue and White. The duo downed Alex Felisa and Rafa Termat of Stony Brook, 6-4, before holding off Niagara's Inaki Belloso and Michael Elortequi 8-7 (4). The tandem earned a victory over the Peacocks' Tom Jottrand and Carlos Carrera, 6-3. SPU's Luke Whaley and Rodriguez fell to the team of Prezant and Switzler, 6-5 (4), while Marcinkowski and Pugliese registered a 6-3 win over Binghamton's Maisin and Maisin Rueben.
Hubbard added, “Much like our other tournaments, I am happy with the way our team competed. This upcoming weekend at the Columbia Classic there will be the toughest tournament we have played this fall, so we are looking forward to competing hard and seeing how we match up against the top teams in the region.”
The Columbia Classic is set for October 4-6.
