COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Monmouth University field hockey team scored two goals in the first half and added a second half tally to defeat Georgetown, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the University of Maryland's Field Hockey Complex. Senior
Michelle Pieczynski (Doylestown, Pa./Central Buck West) recorded a pair of goals in the victory, while sophomore
Amanda Schoenfeld (West Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) notched her third goal of the season.
Georgetown got on the board first, just over 10 minutes into the game, when Claire Mittermiller hammered home a rebound following a save from Monmouth's starting goalkeeper,
Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley).
The Hawks (2-9) evened the score four minutes later as Pieczynski capitalized on a shot that was pushed aside by Georgetown's keeper, Briana Pereira. Schoenfeld got on the score sheet in the 26th minute as she dribbled down the right side where she fired a shot to the back of the cage, giving the Blue and White a 2-1 advantage.
Monmouth added an insurance goal 11 minutes into the second stanza. Junior
Trish O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort) sent a feed behind Georgetown's defensive unit to Pieczynski, who finished off the breakaway with her eighth goal of the season, her program-leading 49th career tally.
In just under 56 minutes of action, Mathews turned away seven shots for the Hawks, while
Amanda Westerweller (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) recorded a save in her 14 minutes in cage. Pereira made nine saves for Georgetown in the set back.
The Hawks outshot the Hoyas, 18-13, with 12 of those shots reaching target. Georgetown held the advantage in corner opportunities, 12-6.
Monmouth concludes its non-conference slate tomorrow, as it takes on American at 12:30 in the Nation's Capitol.
