WEST LONG BRANCH, NY — Monmouth rolled to its fourth-straight win Sunday on So Sweet A Cat Field, defeating visiting Wagner, 8-1.
The No. 19 nationally ranked Hawks were led by junior midfielder
Milla Frye who, for the second straight game on home turf, re-set career bests while tying a single game program record for both points (9) and goals (4).
However, it was junior
Éabha Curran who ignited Monmouth on the offensive end, as she poked in the game's opening goal from a scrum in front of net.
Florence van Doorn played the initial ball into Curran who drove the ball into the circle before finding
Ava Zerfass coming in from the top. Zerfass put the initial shot on net that was blocked with Curran cleaning up to put the Hawks up, 1-0 three minutes into the match.
Curran facilitated the next goal for the hosts on a beautiful sequence started with a won tackle from senior back
Eulalie Brouwers inside Monmouth's defensive 25. She found Frye who dribbled the length of the field before finding Curran inside the circle. Frye followed the play and the Hawks took advantage of the 2-v-1, as Curran sent a pass back to Frye for the junior's first score of the afternoon.
Stella Goddard-Despot then added another just a minute later, as she sped past two Seahawks defenders to lift a shot over Wagner goalie Miley Brezgel for her third goal of the season. Frye capped the first half to give Monmouth a 4-0 lead at the break, as she found space atop the circle and lasered a reverse into the bottom corner for the goal.
Sophomore midfielder
Alicia Vanderlyde got in on the action, coming off a career game against Temple Friday. Working the left corner, she weaved past a defender before lifting a shot top corner over Brezgel to earn her fourth of the season. Wagner broke up the drought to start the fourth quarter, but the Hawks quickly answered as Frye sent a beautiful ball back-post for junior midfielder
Abigail Travers who tipped in her first of the year to boost the lead to 7-1. Frye then officially set a career-high with her fourth goal, as she worked her way inside the circle and getting her reverse to go once more to solidify the 8-1 outcome.
Monmouth dominated throughout the 60 minutes, as the hosts held the advantage in shots (21-7), shots on goal (15-6), while edging the Seahawks in penalty corners, 2-1.
Charlie Bowman earned the start and the win, finishing with four saves, while
Djoeke van Helsdingen aided in the victory, playing the last 30 minutes and making one stop.
The Hawks are back in action Friday for their first CAA action of the season, hosting Towson at 4 p.m. on So Sweet A Cat Field.
