MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Christine Scherr (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) and Kayleena Flores (Atwater,
Calif./Buhach Colony) had two hits each, but the Monmouth University softball
team fell to second-seeded Quinnipiac, 4-1, Friday afternoon at the North
Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Hawks conclude their season at 24-20,
while the Bobcats (31-17) advance to play top-seeded Robert Morris in an
elimination game at approximately 3:30 p.m. today.
Lauren Sulick (Canfield,
Ohio/Canfield) took the loss in the circle for the Hawks, allowing four runs,
two earned, on eight hits and two walks in going the full six innings. Chelsea
Paprocki (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) was named to the All-Tournament Team after
driving in all three Monmouth runs in the tournament, including one in today's
game.
The Bobcats got on the board
first with an unearned run in the bottom of the first. The first two batters
reached on a pair of throwing errors before moving up on a sacrifice bunt and
plating a run on a groundout. Another QU run scored in the second inning when
Ashley Heiberger was hit by a pitch, moved two bases on consecutive sacrifice
bunts and scored on a passed ball.
The Hawks got a run back on
Paprocki's two-out RBI single to left with the bases loaded in the fourth,
scoring Kayla Weiser (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area). But Kate Kuzma (Freehold,
N.J./Colts Neck) was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on the
play, leaving the one-run Hawks deficit.
QU added some insurance in
the sixth, when the first two batters reached on singles. The runners moved to
second and third on a sacrifice bunt. On the play, the Hawks went for the force
at third, but the throw reached the fence in foul ground, allowing the third QU
run to score. Another run scored on a one-out bloop single to shallow right.
The Hawks brought the tying
run to the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Monmouth couldn't
bring across a run, ending the game.
