NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Kaitie Schumacher (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) hit a two-run
home run, but the Monmouth University softball team was defeated by Central
Connecticut, 8-5, Sunday afternoon. CCSU used a five-run fifth inning to
improve to 25-16 (7-6 NEC), while the Hawks fall to 17-18 (7-8 NEC). Game 2 of
the scheduled doubleheader was rained out and will be made up tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Christine Scherr (Nazareth,
Pa./Nazareth Area) added two hits and a run scored for the Hawks. Alissa
Schoelkopf (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) took the loss in the circle,
allowing three earned runs on four hits and five walks in four innings pitched.
Jordan Barnett (Eads, Colo./Eads [Garden City C.C.]) came on in relief and
surrendered five runs, three earned, on three hits and three walks in two
innings pitched.
The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0
lead with two first-inning runs. Scherr doubled to lead off the game, before
Schumacher homered to left to stake the Hawks to the two-run advantage. CCSU
answered with two runs on three hits and a walk in the second to tie the game,
2-2.
CCSU took a one-run lead on
Arielle Bruno's RBI single up the middle in the fourth. The Blue Devils added
five more runs in the fifth off Barnett. Three consecutive walks and an error
set the tone for the inning. Two singles, a double and a wild pitch accounted
for the final four runs scored in the inning, putting the Blue Devils ahead,
8-2.
The Hawks scratched across
three runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Devils
came away with the 8-5 victory.
