SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Monmouth University softball team fell twice to Seton Hall at the
Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Saturday afternoon, setting up a 12:30 p.m.
pairing with Manhattan in Sunday's consolation game. The Pirates won the first
game, 4-1, before taking the second, 3-0. With the results, the Hawks move to
6-6 on the season, while the Pirates improve to 13-11.
Kaitie Schumacher (San Diego,
Calif./Scripps Ranch) and Kayleena Flores (Atwater, Calif./Buhach Colony) led the
way offensively for the Hawks, each going 2-for-5 on the day. Flores belted a
double, while Chelsea Paprocki (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) drove in the Hawks
lone run on the day, scored by Kayla Weiser (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area).
Jordan Barnett (Eads,
Colo./Eads [Garden C.C.]) went seven innings in the circle for the Hawks on the
day, holding the Pirates to one earned run on five hits and a walk, while
striking out two. She took the loss in the second game, departing after four
innings of three-hit ball, allowing her only run of the day. Alissa Schoelkopf
(Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) finished the game, allowing two earned runs
on a hit and a walk in two innings, while striking out three. Lauren Sulick
(Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) took the loss in the first game, surrendering four
earned runs on six hits and four walks in three innings pitched. Barnett came
on to hold the Pirates scoreless on two hits and a walk in the final three
innings.
The Pirates jumped on the
Hawks with four runs in the third inning of the first game. A walk, a bunt
single and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. Laura Canulli's single
then drove in Colltey Sheldon for the first run of the game, before Nicole Loewenstein
brought in Brittany Hammer with another RBI single. Bridget Constantino capped
the scoring with a two-out, two-RBI single down the left field line.
The Hawks got their only run
of the day in the fourth, when Paprocki singled to third base with two outs,
bringing Weiser to the plate.
After three scoreless frames
in the second game, the Pirates got on the board in the fourth when Kristen Kaelin
led off with a double to right center, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and
scored on a sacrifice fly from Danielle DeStaso. Seton Hall added two more runs
in the sixth on Kaelin's two-run home run to right field.
