BASEBALL SPLITS NEC DOUBLEHEADER WITH QUINNIPIAC

HAMDEN, CONN. - The Monmouth University baseball team split a Northeast Conference doubleheader with Quinnipiac, Saturday afternoon at QU Baseball Field.  The Hawks dropped the first game 6-0 before taking the nightcap, 8-2, behind a complete game performance from sophomore starter Dan Smith (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee).

In game two, Smith earned his first victory of the season throwing all 7.0 innings allowing two runs while striking out five for his second career complete game.

The Hawks (15-13, 10-5 NEC) spotted Smith five runs in the first inning as Jake Gronsky (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) doubled with one out and advanced on Ryan Terry's (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) single.  After Danny Avella (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) earned a free pass, Chris Perret (Morris Plains, N.J./Morris Catholic) registered a bases clearing double to the gap in right-center and later scored on an RBI single by Ed Martin (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan [Brookdale CC]).  Cal Costanzo (Edison, N.J./Edison) recorded a base-hit of his own, chasing home Martin, giving MU a 5-0 lead.
QU (13-13, 9-6 NEC) got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on Zak Palmer's double-play groundout to cut the Hawks' lead to 5-1.

Josh Boyd (Port Murray, N.J./West Morris Central) singled to lead off the fourth,  moved to second on Jamie Rosenkranz's (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) base on balls and both runner advanced a base on Gronsky's sacrifice bunt.  Boyd crossed home plate on a wild pitch from the Bobcats' reliever Andrew Rinaldi and Avella registered a sacrifice fly, scoring Rosenkranz, to give the Hawks a commanding 7-1 lead.

QU added a run in the home half of the fourth on Mike Bartlett's single to the bring the Bobcats within five, 7-2.

Avella blasted his third home run of the series, his sixth of the season, to centerfield in the top of the seventh to put the Blue and White up 8-2.

Terry and Martin each registered two hits for MU.

George Dummar is credited with the loss for Quinnipiac as the starter threw 0.1 of an inning allowing five runs on five hits.

In game one, Quinnipiac's starter Kyle Birdsall earned the win, throwing a complete game no-hitter striking out 12 in the process.   Boyd, who earned a walk, and Anthony Lawrence (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury), who was hit by a pitch, accounted for the Hawks' only base runners in the contest.

QU scored five runs within the first two innings capped off by a two-run homerun by Chris Migani in the second frame.  The Bobcats tacked on another run in the fifth on a RBI single by Joe Poletsky to take a 6-0 lead, which was all Birdsall needed.

Pat Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) is saddled with the loss hurling 4.0 innings yielding five runs on seven hits.  Joe Loiodice (Forest Hills, Md./John Carroll) faced four batters allowing a run on two hits while Nick McNamara (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) pitched two perfect innings in relief.

Right-handed pitcher Andy McDonnell (Newtown Square, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) (1-0) gets the ball for the Hawks in series  finale with the Bobcats tomorrow, April 10th, beginning at 1 p.m.
