BASEBALL DROPS EXTRA INNING AFFAIR WITH SETON HALL

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University baseball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped as it fell to Seton Hall, 10-9, in 11 innings.  Ryan Terry (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) recorded a 5-for-6 performance, including a home run, three RBIs while also scoring three times, and became the Monmouth all-time hit leader with 249 base-knocks, passing Joe McCullough's (1995-95) and Chris Collazo's (2006-09) career-mark of 247.

With a 9-5 lead heading into the eighth inning, Seton Hall scored three runs on a Sean Gusrang's two-run home run and Frank Esposito's RBI base-hit, to cut the lead to 9-8.  The Pirates knotted the score in the ninth on Sean Gusrang's sacrifice fly, scoring A.J. Rusbarsky who reached on a single up the middle to lead off the frame.

In the top of the 11th, SHU's lead-off hitter Zack Granite recorded a bunt single and advanced to third on a two-base throwing error by Terry and Rusbarsky followed with a sacrifice fly, plating Granite for the game-winning run.  Monmouth threatened in the home half of the inning as Ed Martin (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan [Brookdale]) singled and advanced to third on Terry's base-hit.  After Terry swiped second to get into scoring position, Nick Pulsonetti (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) connected on a hard ground ball off reliever Mike Genovese towards the left side which was snagged by a diving Giuseppe Papaccio who fired across the diamond for the final out.

Monmouth fell behind Seton Hall, 5-0, through the first four innings and responded in the bottom of the fourth as  Martin drove a ball off SHU reliever Benny Mejia, moved to second on a throwing error by the righty and came around to score on Terry's single up the middle.  After Pulsonetti drew a four-pitch walk, Tom Valichka (Pennsville, N.J./St. Mark's) delivered a pinch-hit single, chasing in Terry, and advanced Pulsonetti to third, who later scored on a wild pitch.  Valichka crossed on home plate on a mishandled throw by the short stop to cut the Pirates' lead to 5-4.

The Blue and White went ahead in the fifth as Terry doubled down the left field line, plating Jamie Rosenkranz (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) and moved Martin to third as the duo lead off the inning with back-to-back singles.  After intentionally walking Pulsonetti, Valichka recorded a two-RBI single up the middle, brining in Martin and Terry.   Pulsonetti crossed home plate for the second time via a Seton Hall wild pitch to cap off the four-run inning which gave MU a 8-5 lead.

Terry blasted his sixth home run of the season, his record setting 248th career hit, to dead center pushing the Hawks ahead, 9-5 in the sixth.

Valichka went 2-for-4, driving in two RBIs and scoring a run off the bench for the Hawks.
Rookie Andrew McGee (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) suffered his second loss of the season out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on four hits in 4.0 innings of relief.

Sophomore Pat Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) started for the Hawks, hurling 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week Stephen Frey (Washingtonville, N.J./Washingtonville) yielded three runs in his inning of relief.  John McDonald (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Eagan Catholic) and Matt Frazier (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) combined for three innings out of the pen for the Blue and White.

George Fernandez earns the win for Seton Hall, which used seven pitchers in the contest.

Monmouth and Seton Hall complete the home-and-home series tomorrow as the Hawks travel to South Orange, N.J. for a 3:30 p.m. start.
