FREY EARNS AKADEMA/NEC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONORS

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth University freshman Stephen Frey (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) was tabbed the Akadema Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by league officials on Monday afternoon.

Frey, the third different Hawk to earn Rookie of the Week plaudits this spring tossed a near-perfect 6.0 innings against Saint Peter's to notch his second collegiate victory. The southpaw did not allow a hit during his 6.0 innings of relief in the eventual 11-3 win, while notching a career-high five strikeouts.

After Saint Peter's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning runs, Frey came out of the bullpen to start the second frame, and worked a season-best six innings. The freshman hurler walked the leadoff batter, who advanced to second base on a sac bunt, but used a ground out and strike out to strand the runner. Frey allowed another base runner on a one-out hit-by-pitch in the third inning, but slammed the door shut the rest of the way.

Frey retired the last 14 batters he faced before handing the ball, and an 11-3 lead, to classmate
Andrew McGee in the eighth inning.

Frey, who earned his first career win by pitching 1.1 scoreless innings in a 10-9 triumph over Central Connecticut back on April 3, joined McGee (twice) and
Jake Gronsky as Rookie of the Week honorees this season.

Monmouth (22-13) returns to action on Tuesday, April 26, when the Hawks, who have won 10 straight contests, host Seton Hall at 3:30 p.m.
