Hawks Fall at Northeastern in Series Opener

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Monmouth University baseball team fell at Northeastern University, 7-1 in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) action on Thursday afternoon.
 
The first three innings of the contest belonged to the pitchers as neither side could get a runner past second base.
 
Northeastern broke through on the scoreboard in the fourth. The Huskies used three straight two-out singles to take a 3-0 lead. 
 
The Hawks got one back in the top of the sixth. A pair of singles and a hit by a pitch loaded the bases with one out. Nick Lovarco lifted a fly ball to right field that scored Wyatt Hunt and made it a 3-1 game.
 
Northeastern used four runs in the seventh to pull away and take a 7-1 lead. The Huskies sent eight men to the plate and scored on three hits and a Monmouth error. 
 
The Hawks got a runner on to start the ninth but couldn't get him home as Northeastern closed out the victory.
 
Notes
  • Wyatt Hunt's two-hit afternoon gave him a team-leading 11 multi-hit games this season.
  • Hunt extended his hit streak to a season-long 12 games for the Hawks.
  • The Hawks have three players who have reached base safely in 20 or more games and all three extended their streaks in the contest. Simmi Whitehill has reached safely in all 26 games after a single in the sixth inning. Hunt extended his streak to 21 straight games while Chris Walsh was hit by a pitch and extended his streak to 20 games.
  • Walsh and Brendan Buecker were each hit by a pitch. The Hawks have been hit by a pitch a CAA leading 54 times this season.
  • Ryan Mealy, who suffered the loss for the Hawks, tossed a season-high six innings and struck out four. 
  • Mealy has struck out at least four batters in five straight games and in seven of his eight starts this season.
