WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University softball team swept Robert Morris University, winning 1-0 and 4-2, to open the Northeast Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon at the MU Softball Park. The Hawks improve to 11-10 overall with the two wins, while the Colonials fall to 8-17.
In the first game, MU came away with the win in its final at-bat courtesy of an Emily deLong (Rothschild, Wisc. /DC Everest) home run to left center. Pitcher Lauren Sulick (Canfield, Ohio /Canfield), who earned both wins of the day in the circle, fired a four-hit shutout in the afternoon's first contest.
In second game of the twinbill, with the Hawks down, 2-1 in the third, freshman Kaitie Schumacher (San Diego, Calif. /Scripps Ranch) plated two runs with a single up the middle to give MU the lead for good. RMU took the game's initial lead on a two-RBI single in the second by Katrina Gallagher.
Sophomore Christine Scherr (Nazareth, Pa. /Nazareth Area) went 2-for-4 in the second game, while Sulick ran her record to 10-6 on the year after earning the win. She logged her second complete game of the day, surrendering six hits and two runs, to go along with four strikeouts and four walks.
The Hawks return to action on Thursday when they host Villanova at 3:00 pm. MU was originally scheduled to visit Long Island University on Sunday, but the league doubleheader has been moved to April 7 at a time that has yet to be determined.
