MONMOUTH BOWLING COMPETES AT MUSIC CITY CLASSIC

SMYRNA, Tenn.- Monmouth University's women's bowling team competed at the 2011 Music City Classic last weekend in the Hawks final tuneup before the 2011 NEC Championship.

The Tournament featured 13 teams from the most recent USTCA Top-20, including top-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson, third ranked Central Missouri, fourth ranked (and host) Vanderbilt and fifth-ranked Nebraska, which won the event on the final day of competition.

Day one's Baker format matches found the Hawks with a 1-4 record, defeating Minnesota State by 77 pins while narrowly losing to Louisiana Tech and No. 7 Kutztown.   Freshman Brittany Havens (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) led MU with a six-match average of 184.5.  Sophomore Emily Fiore (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) was 10 spots behind her with a 171.7 average on the weekend.

In Saturday's traditional matches, MU defeated Valparaiso but fell to five other opponents.  The Hawks dropped a pair of contests to Alabama A&M and Minnesota State before ending the tournament with another win over the Crusaders.

Monmouth earned a bid to the 2011 NEC Championship after the last NEC match, which was held locally at Howell Lanes.  The NEC Championships will be held this weekend at Parkway Lanes in Elmwood Park, N.J.
