GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Monmouth University baseball team fell to Liberty in the second game of the Keith LeClair Classic hosted by East Carolina, 4-3, at Clark-LeClair Field. The Hawks fall to 3-6 with the loss, while the Flames improve to 7-8 on the season with the victory.
Liberty scored in the first and third inning on a RBI single and sacrifice fly by Doug Bream and Tyler Bream, respectively to gain an early 2-0 lead.
Monmouth struck in the seventh as Jamie Rosenkranz (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) and Danny Avella (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) started the frame with singles and advanced on rookie Jake Gronsky's (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) fly out.Freshman Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) ) followed with an RBI single up the middle to knot the game at 2-2.
The Flames broke the tie in the ensuing frame, taking advantage of a Monmouth throwing error and an RBI single by Doug Bream to regain the lead 4-2.
The Hawks tacked on one run in the ninth on a run-scoring double by Gronsky, chasing home Rosenkranz who walked to reach base. Flames' reliever J.J. McLeod came in got Bickford to fly out to end the threat with Gronsky stranded at second.
Sophomore starter Pat Light (Colts Neck, N.J./Christian Brother Academy) struck out six while allowing one unearned run on four hits in 7.0 innings of work. Nick McNamara (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) is credited with the loss allowing two runs on two hits. Neil Harm (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) and Stephen Frey (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) combined to throw 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball to end the contest. Flames' starter John Niggli earns the win, throwing 7.0 innings, allowing two runs while McLeod picked up his first save of the season.
The Hawks conclude the Keith LeClair Classic tomorrow at 10 a.m. when they face in-state rival Rutgers.
