SOMERSET, N.J. - Monmouth University senior outfielder Nick Pulsonetti (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) and freshman pitcher Andrew McGee (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) have been named Akadema Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday. Pulsonetti and McGee guided MU to its first season-opening series win since the 2007 campaign as it took two of three from Virginia Commonwealth this past weekend.
Pulsonetti led the offensive attack for the Hawks, batting .636 (7-for-11), scoring two runs and driving in one over the first three games of the season. The outfielder went 4-for-5, including two doubles and one run scored, in the season opening win on Friday. He went 2-for-4 at the plate in the second game of the series, driving in his first run of the year with a two-out, seventh-inning single to cut VCU's lead to one. In the series finale, the senior went 1-for-2 and scored the Hawks second run of the game, to give the Blue and White a two run advantage in the second inning.
McGee made his collegiate debut over the weekend, throwing a total of 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball in the pair of wins. The rookie blanked the Rams in the ninth, allowing one hit and striking out one to preserve the Hawks 6-1 win on Friday. On Sunday, McGee entered the game out of the bullpen and threw 5.1 of two-hit baseball while fanning three to secure his first career win. After the Hawks took the lead in the top of the 11th, the freshman struck out two and induced a ground ball out despite allowing a leadoff hit in the bottom of the frame. McGee led the Hawks' bullpen that threw 13.2 scoreless innings, fanning 12 Rams while only walking six throughout the weekend.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, March 4th, as it heads south to Boca Raton, Florida to open up a three game series with Florida Atlantic.
