Hawks Fall to NJIT

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University baseball team fell to NJIT, 17-5 on Tuesday afternoon in nonconference action.
 
The Hawks started strong in the first inning. Simmi Whitehill's one out single scored Wyatt Hunt with the game's first run. Nick Lovarco followed with a single and NJIT error on the play allowed both Whitehill and Chris Walsh to score. Monmouth pushed its lead to 4-0 on Jake Howlett's RBI groundout in the frame.
 
NJIT sent 17 men to the plate in the top of the second and scored 13 runs to take the lead for good. 
 
NJIT pushed its lead to 14-4 with a run in the top of the third on a Monmouth error.
 
Monmouth got one back in the bottom of the fourth. Lovarco led off with a single and eventually came around to score on Will Fahey's single to left field.
 
NJIT scored three times in the top of the fifth and claimed the 17-5 win after seven innings of play.
 
Notes
  • Nick Lovarco led the Hawks with two hits in the contest. It was his 11th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Simmi Whitehill had a first inning single and extended his reached base safely streak to 33 straight games. Whitehill needs one more game to match Casey Caufield (2022) for the longest streak in the last 10 years.
  • Chris Walsh was hit by a pitch in the first inning and extended his reached base safely streak to 27 straight games.
  • Walsh scored in the first inning and has now scored at least one run in six straight games.
  • Drew Yagodzinskie took the loss for Monmouth after giving up 10 runs in 1.1 innings of work.
  • Jake Nolan tossed his second straight scoreless appearance. The senior went the final 2.2 and allowed just one base runner on a walk.
