NORFOLK, Va. - The Monmouth University softball team split its two contests on the second day at the 2011 Spartan Invitational, hosted by Norfolk State University, topping Morgan State, 5-0 and falling to Iona, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks move to 3-1 on the season with the two decisions on Sunday.
In its first game, a shutout win over the Bears, MU's Lauren Sulick (Canfield, Ohio /Canfield) pitched five innings, striking out four to improve to 2-0 on the season. Junior Michelle Rapp (Hammonton, N.J. /Hammonton) did not allow a hit over the final two frames, striking out three to earn her first save of the season.
Senior Emily deLong (Rothschild, Wisc. /DC Everest) had three singles, driving in three runs and scoring another for the Hawks from her leadoff spot. Freshman Shannon Fitzgerald (Santa Clarita, Calif. /Valencia) and sophomore Christine Scherr (Nazareth, Pa. /Nazareth Area) each went 2-for-3 at the plate, with Fitzgerald belting a triple and Scherr scoring a run.
In their loss to the Gaels, only Scherr and freshman Alicia DeSanto (Upper Darby, Pa. /Upper Dary) managed a hit apiece.
MU returns to action on Friday when it takes part in the Central Florida University Tournament in Orlando. The Hawks face off with Florida A&M and Virginia Tech on Friday at the tournament.
