STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Monmouth University baseball team dropped a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Wagner on Saturday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the pair of losses, Monmouth falls to 13-16 overall and 7-8 in league play.
Monmouth generated a run in the first inning after
Josh Boyd delivered a lead-off single and advanced to third on a stolen base, which was coupled with a throwing error. Boyd then crossed the plate, giving the Hawks a 1-0 edge on
Jamie Rosenkranz's groundout.
The Seahawks answered in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1 when Brian Martutartus connected on a one-out double to rightfield and scored on a Jon Lucas single through the left side.
MU regained the lead in the third inning as Boyd led off with a double, and after
Ryan Terry was hit by a pitch and a groundout moved both runners into scoring position,
Mike Casale laced a two-run single to right, giving the Hawks a 3-1 advantage.
Wagner trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fifth when a lead-off walk to Damian Csakai, issued by Monmouth starter
Pat Light, came around to score.
Light, who surrendered three hits and a hit-by-pitch in the sixth, left the game with the bases loaded and two away leading by one run, while freshman
Neil Harm entered. On the next at-bat, a fielding error allowed the Seahawks to tie the score at 3-3, while Tommy Higgins followed with a two-run single to give Wagner the 5-3 win.
Light (1-4) was saddled with the loss for the Hawks in game one, allowing two earned runs in 5.2 innings of work.
Nick McNamara retired the only batter he faced in the decisive sixth for Monmouth, while Boyd led the attack, going 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot.
In the second game, Monmouth scored first again in the opening frame, when three straight one-out singles pushed a run across, but Wagner put together a four-run second inning to take the lead. In the second frame, Wagner scored four runs on two hits to take the 4-1 advantage, off starter
Chris Perret.
Monmouth climbed within 4-2 in the fourth when Rosenkranz led off with a double, advanced to second on a one-out single, and crossed home on
Bobby Dombrowski's sac fly.
The Seahawks answered with a double, followed by a sac fly of their own to grab the 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Perret (0-2) worked 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on a pair of hits, while
Matt Goitz tossed the remaining 4.1 frames, surrendering one run on two hits.
Monmouth and Wagner finish this NEC series on Sunday with a nine-inning game at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. First pitch is set for noon.
