HAMDEN, CONN. - The Monmouth University field hockey team shutout Quinnipiac 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at QU Turf Complex. The win, which ties the program-record for victories, improves the Hawks' record to 11-3 and 3-0 in Northeast Conference play, while the Bobcats drop to 5-8 on the season and 1-2 in league action.
"The entire weekend was a step in right direct," said head coach Carli Figlio. "We played intense hockey and to play a good, skillful Quinnipiac team and come out with a win is a great accomplishment for us."
Four minutes into the contest senior Meredith Violi (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) inserted a penalty corner to junior Ashley McPeek (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney). The local product settled the pass and pushed it into the circle to senior Melissa Murphy (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) who blasted a shot past QU goalkeeper Nicole Lewis for her first career goal and a 1-0 Hawks' lead.
The Hawks added to their lead in the final minute of regulation, when senior Morganne Firmstone (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) connected with Michelle Pieczynski (Doylestown, Pa./Central Buck West) at the top of the circle. The sophomore dribbled in and fired a shot towards the lower right of the cage for her eighth score of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Melissa Katz (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional [Michigan State]) registered her second straight shutout, and third of the season, making three saves. Lewis turned away six Monmouth shots in the loss.
Monmouth held the advantage in shots, 14-8, while each team was awarded seven penalty corners.
Monmouth returns home to West Long Branch on October 22nd to face Siena at So Sweet A Cat Field at 4 p.m.
