WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Junior Mary Wilks received a pass back from senior Alessandra DeTata, and notched the game-winner with just 17.9 seconds left in the first overtime, to lift the Monmouth University women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Navy on Saturday afternoon.
Wilks, who registered her team-leading fourth goal of the season, found DeTata with a short throw-in, and laced a shot into the far netting, past a diving Beth Reed, for the decisive goal, handing Navy just its second loss of the season.
With the victory, Monmouth improves to 5-3 on the year, while Navy, ranked No. 5 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, falls to 8-2-1 overall.
"Today was an awesome team performance," stated Monmouth head coach Krissy Turner. "We defended very well against an excellent team, and this is a terrific confidence booster going into NEC play."
Eight minutes into the match, Wilks found Lopez near the top of the box and the senior turned and laced a left-footed shot on goal that goalkeeper Reed made a diving save on to keep the game scoreless.
With 11:30 remaining in the half, Wilks' work along the touchline, allowed Lopez to find a streaking Courtney Snyder for the apparent go-ahead goal, but the play was waived off due to an offside call.
Reed, who made four saves in the opening stanza, was up to the task once again with five minutes remaining until intermission, as she made another diving save on Kim Malecki's attempt at the right post.
Monmouth held a 16-2 edge in shots in the game, forcing Reed to make eight saves for Navy. Lia Fierro posted her fifth shutout of the season as well, giving her 20 for her career.
Monmouth returns to action on Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m., on The Great Lawn, as the Hawks open Northeast Conference play with a match against Mount St. Mary's. The program will host its first "Go For Goals Day" on Tuesday morning.
