NEW YORK, N.Y.- ?Monmouth University's
track & field team competed on Friday and Saturday at the NYC Qualifying
Challenge.
A number of Hawks hit impressive marks, with freshman Kevin Merrigan (Marlton,
N.J./Cherokee) running a time of 48.50 to qualify for next weekend's IC4A
Division I Championships in the 400m.?
Junior Brittany Gibbs (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) hit the ECAC qualifying
mark in the triple jump, clearing 12 meters.
Sophomore Vincent Elardo (Forked River, N.J./Lacey) won the college division of
the shot put, hitting a mark of 54' 8 ?”. ?Shawn Sabo (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) was
second in the discus (156' 9”) while Elardo was third with his throw of 152' 5”.? Freshman Stevenson Cajuste (Egg harbor,
N.J./Egg Harbor) took home fifth place in the long jump 23' ?”.
Monmouth got impressive pentathlon performances from sophomore Mary Wilks
(Bridgeton, N.J./Bridgeton) and freshman Lindsey Walsh (Mt. Laurel,
N.J./Lenape).? Wilks qualified for next
week's ECAC's with a seven-event score of 4,559.? Walsh earned a spot at the U.S. Junior
Nationals with her score of 4,244.? Wilks'
had a 100 hurdle time of 15.92, a high jump of 5' 1”, a shot put mark of 32' 2”,
200m time of 27.77, a long jump of 17' 3 ?”, a javelin mark of 39.47m and a
800m time of 2:29.42.? Walsh recorded a 100
hurdle time of 15.98, a high jump of 5', a shot put mark of 28' 2”, 200m time
of 27.84, a long jump of 18' ?”, a javelin mark of 25.56m and a 800m time of
2:28.45.
On Friday, Elardo earned a third place spot in the hammer after throwing a
distance of 162' 6”.? Shawn Sabo (Oakland,
N.J./Indian Hills) was fifth in the event with his mark of 142' 9 1/2”.? In the women's hammer, Kelly Dantley (Imperial,
Pa./West Allegheny) was second with her throw of 139' 9 ?”.? Junior Laura Ankrom (Prospect, Pa./Butler)
was fourth (131' 6”) and a trio of freshmen Jessica Torrito (Smithtown,
N.Y./Smithtown), Allyson DiVirgillio (North Haledon, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and
Monica Kloc (Matawan, N.J./Matawan) went fifth, eighth and ninth.
Kloc was eighth in the shot put, coach Taryn Landers was third in the 5000m and
Garth Deblaso claimed ninth in the 1500m.?
Senior Brianne Edwards made the finals in the 100m and the 200m.
The Hawks will compete at the IC4A and ECAC Division I Championships next
weekend.
