HAMDEN, CONN. ? Monmouth University swept a Northeast Conference baseball doubleheader at Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 16-1 and winning the second game 7-3. With the sweep, Monmouth improves to 27-20 overall and 14-8 in the NEC.
In game one, Monmouth registered 26 base runners, en route to 16 runs, while
Ryan Buch improved to 7-3 on the season, behind his 6.0 shutout innings with eight strikeouts.
The Hawks posted an eight-run third frame to take control of game one, which was highlighted by
Nick Pulsonetti's three-run homer to right center, and
Bobby Dombrowski's grand slam to left. Monmouth scored its first run of the inning on a wild pitch, after loading the bases on three consecutive walks.
Monmouth tacked on a run in the top of the fourth, to snare a 9-0 lead, when
Chris Collazo's double to right, drove in
Ryan Terry, who led off the frame with a walk. The Hawks pushed the lead to 10-0 on
Jamie Rosenkranz's single, which plated Collazo.
Monmouth added three runs on four hits in the fifth inning to go in front 13-0, as
Josh Boyd delivered an RBI single, Dombrowski scored on a wild pitch, and Terry lifted a sac fly.
The Hawks pushed across three more runs for a 16-0 lead in the top of the seventh, as Monmouth loaded the bases, before
Rick Niederhaus delivered a two-run single and
Tim McEndy scored on an error.
In the second game, Monmouth went ahead 1-0 in the third inning when
Josh Boyd reached on an error, and later scored on a wild pitch. The Hawks inflated the lead to 2-0 in the fourth when a Rosenkranz groundout drove in Collazo.
The Blue and White pushed the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth when Boyd started the frame with a single, and later came around on Pulsonetti's double to right.
The Hawks manufactured a run in the top of the seventh as Boyd led off with a hit by pitch, advanced to second on
Brett Holland's sac bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed home on a Terry's fielder's choice, as Monmouth took a 4-0 advantage.
Monmouth loaded the bases in the eighth and added a run when Dombrowski laid down an RBI sacrifice bunt, which brought home
David Jacob from third.
QU trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth behind a run-scoring fielder's choice and a triple off reliever
Nick McNamara, and a balk charged to
Steve Sanguiliano.
Pulsonetti's two-run homer to left field in the top of the ninth, tacked a pair of runs back on to Monmouth's lead, putting the Hawks ahead 7-3.
Monmouth starting pitcher
Nick Vallillo worked 4.0 scoreless frames, allowing just a pair of singles, and four walks. McNamara (2-2) picked up the win for the Hawks in relief, while Sanguiliano earned his third save of the season.
Pulsonetti's two home runs on the day give the sophomore 10 for the season, his second straight year with double-digit homers.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, when the Hawks host Saint Peter's at 3:30 p.m.
