EMMITSBURG, MD. ? Monmouth's offense posted 27 runs, on 35 hits, en route to a Northeast Conference doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks registered a 19-5 victory in game one, and collected an 8-1 triumph in the nightcap, as starters
Brett Brach and
Ryan Buch each recorded 10 strikeouts en route to victories for the Blue and White.
With the pair of wins, highlighted by seven home runs, including three from freshman
Jamie Rosenkranz, Monmouth pushed its win streak to four straight, 24-19 overall, and 11-7 in the NEC.
In game one, Monmouth scored 17 runs over the final four innings, to claim a 19-5 victory, while Brach (6-1) earned the victory by tossing 8.0 innings, allowing one unearned run. Brach, who recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts, scattered six hits en route to his team-high sixth victory.
The Monmouth offense, which collected 21 hits overall, including three home runs, had a trio of players record four-hit outings in game one, including
Brett Holland (4-for-6) in the leadoff spot,
Chris Collazo and Rosenkranz.
Monmouth, which held a 2-0 lead in the fourth, notched three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. In the sixth, Holland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to account for the first run, while
Ryan Terry delivered a two-run single up the middle.
The Mount trimmed the lead to 5-1 in the home half of the sixth, but the Hawks answered with an eight-run seventh frame to grab control at 13-1. Monmouth, paced by
Josh Boyd's first career homer, added a pair of runs in the eighth for a 15-1 lead.
Rosenkranz and
Tim McEndy connected on back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth for the Hawks. Rosenkranz drilled a three-run homer to right, and McEndy followed with a pinch-hit solo shot to right center for the 19-1 advantage.
Mount St. Mary's notched four runs in the bottom of the ninth to account for the 19-5 final.
Game two saw the Hawks post a six-run seventh frame to take an 8-0 lead, en route to an 8-1 victory, while Buch (6-3) tossed a complete game, allowing one run on five hits.
The Hawks went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, when
Nick Pulsonetti drilled his eighth homer of the year, a solo shot to centerfield on a full count. Monmouth pushed the edge to 2-0 in the fifth as Rosenkranz connected on his second round-tripper of the day.
Monmouth broke the game open in the seventh, as the Hawks loaded the bases in front of Collazo's two-run single to right, inflating the advantage to 4-0.
Paul Bottigliero followed with his team-leading 13th homer of the year, a three-run shot to center, pushing Monmouth in front 7-0. Rosenkranz's second solo shot of the game moved the Hawks ahead 8-0.
Tommy Flynn's leadoff, solo homer in the bottom of the seventh accounted for the 8-1 final.
In game two, Pulsonetti went 3-for-3, while Holland, Bottigliero, Rosenkranz,
Bobby Dombrowski, and
David Jacob each had two hits apiece.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, when the Hawks and Mount St. Mary's compete in another Northeast Conference doubleheader.
