ANNAPOLIS, MD. ? On Sunday, the Monmouth University baseball team posted victories over UMass (9-1) and Navy (11-5), pushing its win streak to four straight, as the Hawks improve to 5-6 on the season.
In the first game, Monmouth junior
Nick Vallillo tossed a complete game victory at UMass, allowing a single run in the first inning, while scattering eight hits, en route to the win. Vallillo (1-0) worked a career-high nine innings in his first career complete game, with five strikeouts and no walks.
In game two, a victory over host Navy, the Hawks posted 11 runs on 15 hits, as senior
Brett Holland collected a career-high four hits and four runs scored, while senior
Rick Niederhaus added three hits and three RBI.
With the victory over UMass on Sunday morning, head coach
Dean Ehehalt earned his 400th career win at Monmouth. He now stands at 401-368-2 in his 16th season at Monmouth.
UMass took a 1-0 lead in the first, as the Minutemen registered a double and an RBI triple for the early edge.
The Hawks, who scored at least a run in each of the first five innings, tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first frame, when
Chris Collazo's single brought home
David Jacob, who led off with a single.
Monmouth went ahead 2-1 in the second when
Josh Boyd's single drove in
Jamie Rosenkranz, and the Hawks pushed the lead to 3-1 in the third as Collazo tripled to left center, his third career triple, and later scored on a wild pitch.
Boyd's two-run single in the fourth, and
Tim McEndy's first career home run, a two-run shot to right, in the fifth inning, inflated the Hawks' lead to 7-1, and Monmouth tacked on two more runs in the eighth, as Jacob delivered an RBI groundout and Boyd scored on a throwing error.
Monmouth, which collected 12 hits, was paced by Boyd's 3-for-3 outing, while Collazo added two hits.
The Hawks, who scored multiple runs in four different innings, got on the board in the third frame, as Holland smacked a solo home run and Niederhaus delivered an RBI single to center, both with two outs.
Monmouth pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fourth as Rosenkranz connected on his first career homer, a two-run shot down the rightfield line, while McEndy added an RBI single.
Navy trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the home half of the fourth when the Midshipmen loaded the bases, and got RBI single, and RBI fielder's choice and a two-run double.
The Blue and White increased its lead to 8-4 in the sixth when
Nick Pulsonetti delivered a two-run double, and Niederhaus added an RBI double as well.
Monmouth went ahead 11-4 in the eighth as Holland led off with a double and came around on Collazo's single through the right side. Collazo then scored on a Niederhaus triple, while
Cal Costanzo picked up an RBI with a groundout.
Navy notched a run in the bottom of the eighth as a leadoff double, followed by a one-out single, pulled the Midshipmen within 11-5.
Nick Meyers (1-0), making his first start for the Hawks since March 4, 2007, earned the win for Monmouth, working 2.0 scoreless innings.
Matt Frazier, also working back from injury, allowed three runs on three hits in one inning of work.
Tim Ballard worked 1.1 frames, allowing one run, while
Steve Sanguiliano surrendered one run on two hits, in 3.2 frames.
Nick McNamara rounded out the Hawks' staff, working a shutout ninth inning.
Monmouth, which has now had double-digits hits in eight straight games, returns to action on Friday, March 27, when the Hawks host Bryant at 3 p.m., in the opening game of a four-game series.
