BOCA RATON, FLA. ? FAU's Troy Bubley delivered a two-out, run-scoring single up the middle, in the bottom of the ninth, to break a 9-9 tie, and lift the Owls to a 10-9 victory over Monmouth University, on Tuesday night. The Hawks, who have suffered one-run losses at FAU in each of the last two seasons, fall to 1-6 on the season, while the Owls, who defeated No. 17 Florida earlier this year, improve to 10-3 overall.
Mounting a comeback in the top of the ninth, the Hawks loaded the bases with no outs after
Ryan Terry and
Nick Pulsonetti singles, and
Paul Bottigliero's walk, which set the stage for
Tim McEndy's pinch hit, two-run single, trimming the lead to 9-8. After
Brett Holland was hit by a pitch to pack the bags once again,
Bobby Dombrowski lifted a sac fly to left, to tie the score at 9-9.
Monmouth posted a single run in the first inning, when
Nick Pulsonetti's groundout drove in Terry, who delivered a first-pitch triple to left center.
FAU took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first off Monmouth's
Adam Krebs, making his first career start, as Nick DelGuidice connected on an RBI double, and Nick Criaris delivered a two-run single.
The Hawks trimmed the Owls' lead to 3-2 in the top of the second frame when Dombrowski connected on a two-out, infield single and stole second base. Dombrowski rounded the bases on
Jamie Rosenkranz's first career double, to centerfield.
After a hit-by-pitch and a single to open the home half of the second inning, knocked Krebs from the game, FAU pushed the lead to 5-2, on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly off reliever
Tim Ballard.
The Hawks stormed back to tie the score at 5-5 in the top of the fifth, when Bottigliero ripped a bases-clearing double, which plated both
David Jacob and Terry, who each walked, and Pulsonetti who reached on a fielding error.
The Owls answered with three singles in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim a 6-5 edge, and added two more runs in the sixth frame, to go ahead 8-5.
Bubley's two-out home run to right field, off Monmouth reliever
Matt Frazier, pushed the FAU lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the seventh.
Monmouth cut into the advantage in the top of the eighth when
Rick Niederhaus led off with a hit-by-pitch, and stole second base. After Niederhaus' first stolen base of the year,
Josh Boyd followed with an RBI single to center, making the score 9-6.
Krebs, in just his second career appearance, worked one inning, allowing five runs on four hits. Ballard allowed three runs on eight hits, with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work, in relief of Krebs. Frazier, who entered in the sixth frame, tossed 1.1 frames, allowing a lone run.
Steve Sanguiliano (0-1), who pitched a scoreless eighth for the Hawks, allowed a two-out walk in the ninth, which led to the game-winning score.
Terry went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Blue and White, while Pulsonetti and Boyd added two hits apiece.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, March 13, when the Hawks face Navy in Annapolis at 3 p.m.
