NEW BRITAIN, CONN. ? Monmouth sophomore Ryan Buch and senior Justin Esposito combined for a complete game shutout to pace the Hawks to a 2-0 victory over Central Connecticut State in game one of a Northeast Conference doubleheader, on Saturday afternoon.
Monmouth, which has won 10 straight games, improves to 27-9 overall and 13-1 in league play.
Buch (6-1) worked 6.2 scoreless innings to earn the win for the Hawks, while Esposito registered the final out of the game, with the bases loaded, to earn his eighth save of the year.
Paul Bottigliero drove in both runs for Monmouth, which has now won 25 of its last 26 games, and has put together two, double-digit win streaks this season. Ryan Terry added two hits for the Hawks.
Monmouth posted a single run in the top of the first inning, as Andy Meyers connected on a two-out single, and scored on Bottigliero's RBI double to right center.
The Hawks went ahead 2-0 in the third inning, when Kyle Higgins and Ryan Terry started the frame with consecutive singles, which put runners on the corners. With one out, Bottigliero followed with a sac fly to center, plating Higgins.
CCSU, which was limited to four hits in the game, collected two singles in the fourth inning, and two more in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, a hit-by-pitch, and consecutive singles loaded the bases against Buch, but Esposito got Kyle Zarotney to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Buch, who struck out the side in the second inning, recorded seven strikeouts, while allowing four singles, and just one walk.
